LAP-SIT STORY TIME AND PRE-SCHOOL STORY HOUR
“Leaves” will be the theme for Tuesday, October 19, 2010. One half-hour session is held for Lap-Sit Story Time each Tuesday at 10:00 AM with parent and child attending the Story Time and Pre-School Story Hour is held each Tuesday at 10:30 AM. In both sessions, children listen to stories and participate in finger plays, songs and crafts. There is no cost for this service and new families are always welcome. COMPUTER ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE
Do you need help with word processing, e-mail, or Internet searching? Volunteer Paul Gaeth will be in the Computer Lab in October to give assistance on Thursdays, 21st, and 28th from 4:30 – 6:00 PM.

“How to Train Your Dragon” Rated: PG Time: 98 minutes
“Hiccup is a Viking teenager who aspires to hunt dragons, but doesn't exactly fit in with his tribe's longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers. His world gets turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges him and his fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view.”

The movie will be shown on the 7 foot by 7 foot screen in the library’s Community Room. Popcorn is provided and movie goers may bring their own, non-alchoholic beverages.

LIBRARY BOARD MEETING
The Pigeon District Library Board of Trustees will meet Thursday, October 28 at 4:30 PM in the library’s Community Room. The meeting is open to the public.

LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF MICHIGAN 2010 VOTING GUIDE
Copies of the League of Women Voters of Michigan 2010 Nonpartisan Voter Guide are available at the library to assist voters as they prepare for the General Election which will be held on Tuesday, November 2. “The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.”

CIRCULATION
Circulation for September 2010 was 2,942 items including 1,670 Books, 1 Toy, 6 Discovery Packs, 188 DVD Rentals, 230 Video Checkouts, 71 Audio, Books on CD and Playaways, 51 Magazines, 243 Internet Users, 8 Puzzles, 434 New Materials, and 40 NF Videos and DVDs. Inter-Loan statistics included 313 borrowed and 394 loaned to other libraries through the Valley Library Consortium. From the MeLCat library system 42 items were borrowed and 24 items loaned and on the Peabody system 1 item was loaned to other libraries. Three Story Hours were held with 37 in attendance. Thirty registrations for the month included: Caseville 11, Fairhaven 4, Mckinley 2, Oliver 4, Winsor 8, and 1 limited use card.

BANNED BOOKS WEEK: CELEBRATING THE FREEDOM TO READ
The week of September 25 through October 2 marks the 29th Anniversary of Banned Books Week. Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted banning of books across the United States.

SEPTEMBER IS LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH
The American Library Association (ALA) is pleased to have NBA Champion and Olympic Gold medalist Dwyane Wade as honorary chair for Library Card Sign-up Month. Dwyane says “The library card is the smartest card in my wallet. Sign up for yours today.” It is very easy to sign up for a library card. Residents and property owners in the townships of Caseville, Chandler, Fairhaven, McKinley, Oliver, and Winsor, who are three years of age or older, are eligible to register for free library cards. Children under 18 years of age must have the application signed by a parent or legal guardian.

FEE WAIVED STUDENT LIBRARY CARD
Card Fees will be waived for students outside the library service area but attend a school (through grade 12) that is located in any of the six townships we serve-Caseville, Chandler, Fairhaven, McKinley, Oliver, and Winsor.
1) For the card fee to be waived, student I.D. or other proof of pupil status will be needed at the time of registration.
2) A special Limited Use card will be issued to allow such a student to check out Accelerated Reader materials or teacher-specified materials from the Pigeon District Library.

Biography and Genealogy Master Index (BGMI) indexes current, readily available reference sources, as well as the most important retrospective works that cover individuals, both living and deceased, from every field of activity and from all areas of the world. The database has Bibliographic citations only. There are no full-text articles. Patrons are able to access this database from home is they have internet access and are a Michigan resident or have access to a Michigan library.

CIRCULATION
Circulation for the month of August 2010 was 3,926 items including 2,178 Books, 27 toys, 4 Discovery Packs, 256 DVD Rentals, 372 Video Checkouts, 163 Audio, Books on CD and Playaways, 83 Magazines, 246 Internet Users, 2 Puzzles, 1 AV Equipment, 552 New Materials, and 42 NF Videos and DVDs. Income received included $130.00 from Copier, $274.00 from Fines, and $83.00 from Faxes. Interlibrary Loan included 378 items borrowed and 479 items loaned to other libraries. Five Story Hours were held with 107 in attendance. Twenty-six registrations for the month included: Caseville 3, Fairhaven 5, Oliver 6, and Winsor 12.

BOOKPAGE
The August 2010 issue of BookPage has arrived and can be found in the library’s Information Center. A monthly general interest review, BookPage covers the best in new releases. BookPage typically reviews up to 100 of each month’s new fiction, nonfiction, business, children’s, spoken word audio and how-to books. The tone is upbeat and literate, focusing on bestsellers as well as new discoveries.

PRE-SCHOOL GRADUATION
The Pigeon District Library held a graduation ceremony during story hour on August 24 for the children who will be going to DK or Kindergarten this fall. Fifteen adults and twenty children were in attendance. The graduates were Isabella Herford, Heidi Keim, Alexis Stafford, Grace Trost, and Brianna Yoder. Each graduate received a diploma for completing story hour. Guest speakers were Officer Tom Morneau and Deputy Charlie Do Right from the Huron County’s Sheriff Department. Their topic was on safety and after their presentation Deputy Do Right received hugs from the children.

LIBRARY CLOSED
The library will be closed on Labor Day, Monday, September 6th. The library will reopen at its regular time of 9 AM on Tuesday, September 7th.

MICHIGAN READS
The Michigan Education Association is proud to be partnering with three of Michigan’s top pro sports teams—the Detroit Pistons, Detroit Red Wings, and Detroit Tigers—to encourage kids to read this summer.

The “Michigan Reads” program lets students throughout the state earn incentives for reading 10 books by August 22, 2010. Students who read 10 books get to choose a great reward from their favorite team, including free or discounted tickets, stadium parties and other cool prizes.

All they have to do is read 10 books. Then, with their parents (or guardians), visit www.michiganreads.com to pick their favorite team and fill in the form. They’ll get a return email with instructions about how to get their free tickets and more. It’s easy.

The Huron Area Writers Group will hold their monthly meeting on August 26, 2010 in the Community Room of the library at 6:30 PM. All writers, no matter what skill level, are invited to the HAWG meeting.

BOOKPAGE

The August 2010 issue of BookPage has arrived and can be found in the library’s Information Center. A monthly general interest review, BookPage covers the best in new releases. BookPage typically reviews up to 100 of each month’s new fiction, nonfiction, business, children’s, spoken word audio and how-to books. The tone is upbeat and literate, focusing on bestsellers as well as new discoveries.

BOOK CLUB

MICHIGAN ELECTRONIC LIBRARY (MeL)
The Michigan eLibrary (http://mel.org) provides all Michigan residents with free access to online full-text articles, full-text books, digital images, and other valuable research information at any time via the Internet; and provides an easy-to-use interlibrary loan system to allow Michigan residents to borrow books and other library materials for free from participating Michigan libraries.

You can access the MeL databases, through our library website at www.pigeondistrictlibrary.com. Click on the MeL (Michigan eLibrary) link which is located in the middle of our homepage. From the next screen click on “MeL Databases” to view the list of 50+ databases which are listed in alphabetical order.

Each week the Pigeon District Library will introduce one of the databases in the Michigan eLibrary. The database chosen for this week is “Academic OneFile”. This database is recommended for Colleges and Universities. It is the premiere source for peer-reviewed, full-text articles from the world’s leading journals and reference sources. With extensive coverage of the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature and other subjects, “Academic OneFile” is both authoritative and comprehensive. With millions of articles available in both PDF and HTML full-text with no restrictions, researchers are able to find accurate information quickly. This database includes full-text coverage of the New York Times back to 1995. Patrons are able to access this database if they are a Michigan resident or have access to a Michigan library.

CIRCULATION
Circulation for the month of July 2010 was 4,241 items including 2,564 Books, 6 Toys, 1 Discovery Pack, 285 DVD Rentals, 111 Audio and CDs, 71 Magazines, 302 Internet Users, 1 Puzzle, 46 NF Videos and NF DVDs, 1 Reference 7 Day Check-Out, and 577 577 New Materials. Income received included $170.00 from Copier, $150.00 from Fines, and $93.00 from Faxes. Interlibrary Loan included 348 items borrowed, and 466 items loaned to other libraries. Four Story Hours were held with 49 in attendance. Twenty-nine registrations for the month included: Caseville 9, Chandler 1, Fairhaven 2, Oliver 9, and Winsor 8.

QUILT SHOW
The Pigeon District Library Quilt Show had a total of 249 registered visitors who came to view the 45 quilts and quilted items on display. Visitors came from many parts of Michigan, and from the states of Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

2010 SUMMER READING PROGRAM
The final week of the Summer Reading Program is July 5-10, 2010. All log books must be returned by July 10, or readers will forfeit the money they earned but did not receive from reading for the Summer Reading Program. SRP money must also be used on or before July 10, 2010. There will be no exceptions.

There will be movies, family programs and afternoon activities during the month of July for Summer Reading Program Participants. There will be no charge for the activities, but the library staff asks that the children sign-up for the activities ahead of time. The Friends of the Pigeon District Library will be holding the Annual Used Book Sale in the Reference Room of the library during Farmers’ Festival. If anyone is interested in volunteering to assist in the set-up of the used book sale, please contact the library for more information. The library staff is requesting that no books be brought to the library for the book sale until July 12, due to limited storage space.

PARK AND READ PROGRAM
Enjoy a Great Book in the Great Outdoors!

Back for a second summer, the DNRE, Department of Natural Resources and Environment, and the Library of Michigan are again offering Park & Read at more than 400 libraries across Michigan like the Pigeon District Library.

Park & Read allows Pigeon District Library card-holders the ability to “check-out” a one-day pass into any Michigan state park or recreation area in lieu of the resident daily motor vehicle permit. This $6 savings also provides free access to more than 500 events taking place in state parks throughout the summer.

For those interested in bringing along a library book for serious beach reading, 71 of the state parks have hammocks available for Park & Read users to borrow while on-site for the day so they can fully enjoy a great book in Michigan’s great outdoors. QUILT SHOW
We will again be having our Annual Quilt Show during the Pigeon Farmers’ Festival. If you are interested in displaying a quilt that you or someone else has made, please call the library at 453-2341 and ask to speak to Jeanette Bach.
Quilt Show Guidelines
1. Only quilts, comforters, and wall hangings will be accepted for display
purposes.
2. Pre-registration is required. Please stop in at the library and pick up a
registration form and return it to the library by July 15th.
3. Quilted items which have been previously displayed at the Pigeon District
Library may be displayed again after 10 years.
4. If an individual wishes to sell a quilted item, he/she must send a picture of
the item along with the registration form.
5. Quilted items for sale will be identified as such and potential buyers will be
directed to a bulletin board where the picture of the quilted item will be
displayed along with the quilter’s contact information. No money will be
collected by the Pigeon District Library staff members and volunteers.

AMNESTY WEEK
Amnesty Week will be held at the Pigeon District Library during Farmers’ Festival Week, July 19th – 24th. Here is your chance to clear your account of fines and overdue books. Overdue books must be returned and you must ask staff at the counter to remove fines from your library account. If something has been lost, you must pay the replacement cost for any lost item.

2010 SUMMER READING PROGRAM
“Make a Splash---READ!” is the theme for the 2010 Summer Reading Program at the Pigeon District Library. Registration has begun and will continue through June 19. Recording of the books will be done June 7 through July 10.

Enjoy five weeks of summer fun by earning “Clam” dollars for the books you read and for participating in the activities throughout the program. When you register for the Summer Reading Program, you will receive a book bag, bookmark, pencil, SRP guidelines, and a calendar of scheduled events.

This program is open to children age 5 by August 31st through grade 8, who live in the library’s service area or attend a school in the library’s service area. There will be movies, family programs and afternoon activities during the months of June and July for Summer Reading Program Participants.

COMPUTER WORKSHOP
Led by Kim Gaeth, the following workshops will be provided free of charge to area residents:

ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS
During the spring the Pigeon District Library is offering a once-a-month late afternoon program for preschoolers, and for children in grades K-2, and grades 3 -5. The program for the preschoolers includes a story, craft, and other activities. The program for children in grades K-2 includes a story, craft, and snack, and the program for children in grades 3-5 includes a snack and activities centered on the paperback book “The Lightning Thief.” Those who sign up for this activity will receive a free copy of the book being discussed. These spring programs will take place during the months of

Circulation for the month of January 2010 was 3,570 items, including 1,774 Books, 18 Cameras and Toys, 6 Discovery Packs, 340 DVD Rentals, 311 Videos, 80 Non-Fiction Videos and DVDs, 82 Audio and CD, 78 Periodicals, 289 Internet Users, 31 Puzzles, and 561 New Materials Check-outs. Income received included $158.10 from Copier, $278.75 from Fines, and $61.00 from Faxes. Inter-Loan statistics included 270 items borrowed and 366 items loaned to other libraries through the Valley Library Consortium. Four Story Hours were held with 48 in attendance. Twenty-nine registrations for the month included: Caseville 9, Fairhaven 7, McKinley 1, Oliver 7, and Winsor 5.

LAKER ACCELERATED READER LISTS
The Accelerated Reader lists from Lakers Elementary School website and Lakers Jr. High website have been copied and put into spreadsheet files. Staff members at the Pigeon District Library have bolded the titles on each list that are in our library’s collection. For each school, one list of titles is in alphabetical order and another list is in book level order. Simply click on the file you wish to view and wait for the list to load.

MICHIGAN AND FEDERAL TAX FORMS ARE HERE!
The library has received a limited supply of Michigan and Federal tax forms. If the tax form you need is not available in paper form, a staff member will assist you in retrieving it from a tax form website. We are pleased to be a source for income tax forms but wish to remind everyone that staff members are not tax professionals and cannot provide tax advice or assistance with e-filing and tax preparation.

Circulation for the month of December 2009 was 3,006 items, including 1,306 Books, 7 Cameras and Toys, 1 Discovery Pack, 113 DVD Rentals, 313 Videos, 47 Non-Fiction Videos and DVDs, 142 Audio and CD, 58 Periodicals, 261 Internet Users, 14 Puzzles, and 485 New Material Check-Outs. Four Story Hours were held with 55 in attendance. Nineteen registrations for the month included: Caseville 6, Fairhaven 1, McKinley 1, Oliver 2, and Winsor 9.

LIBRARY SERVICE AREA
The Pigeon District Library serves the residents and property owners in Caseville, Chandler, Fairhaven, McKinley, Oliver, and Winsor Townships. Registration takes only a few minutes and children as young as three may get a library card with parent’s permission.

People who live outside our service area may purchase a non-resident card or may check out our materials as a “Visiting Patron” when they bring in the library card from their home library.

DON’T FORGET YOUR LIBRARY CARD
To prevent errors from occurring, library patrons are required to present their library card or driver’s license when checking out library materials. If you are having someone else pick up your library items, you must give that person your library card or call ahead of time to let us know who will be picking up your library materials.

ADULT WINTER READING PROGRAM
The Pigeon District Library’s Adult Winter Reading Program is scheduled to begin on January 15, 2010 and will end March 15. Patrons who participated last year had a lot of fun, but participation is totally optional. Local businesses will be donating prizes for the weekly drawings and for the end-of-program party.

HURON AREA WRITERS GROUP (HAWG)
The Huron Area Writers Group will be having their monthly meeting on January 21, 2010 in the Community Room of the library at 7:00 PM. All writers, no matter what skill level, are invited to the HAWG meeting. David Vizard or Dennis Collins will be available to answer questions before the meeting begins at 6:30 PM.

Playaway is the “next generation of audiobooks!” Playaway is the simplest way to listen to an audio book on the go. Each Playaway holds an entire audiobook, regardless of length. You can easily navigate through the chapters, and with automatic bookmarking the story stops where you stopped listening. “No cassettes. No CDs. No downloads. Just play.” Patrons are responsible for obtaining an “AAA” battery, and earbuds to use with the playaways they check out from the library. An audio cable may be checked out to use the Playaway on your car stereo, home computer and home entertainment centers. The Pigeon District Library Board of Trustees will meet Thursday, January 28 at
4:30 PM in the library’s Community Room. The meeting is open to the public.

COFFEE TIME AT THE LIBRARY
Hot coffee, cocoa, and tea are available on Thursdays in the Reference Room of the library. Come and relax with a cup of coffee, cocoa, or tea while reading the newspaper or visiting with fellow readers.

FOOD FOR FINES A SUCCESS!
Many patrons took advantage of the recent Food for Fines program. For every canned/boxed item that was brought in, book fines were reduced by $1.00. Patrons brought in a total of 104 items to reduce fines by $104.00. The non-perishable items will now be given to the local food pantry to replenish their shelves.

When the weather outside gets frightful, please call the library or listen to WLEW to make sure the library will be open for your reading needs.

Memorials to the library are often done on the occasion of the passing of a loved one and are also an appropriate way of honoring and remembering friends and relatives on anniversaries, birthdays, graduations, notable achievements, retirements, and weddings.

A card is sent to the honored person acknowledging your memorials gift and a book plate honoring the person is placed in the item which the library has purchased with your donation.
