The September 2008 issue of BookPage has arrived and can be found in the library’s Information Center. “A monthly general interest review, BookPage covers the best in new releases. BookPage typically reviews up to 100 of each month’s new fiction, nonfiction, business, children’s, spoken word audio and how-to books. The tone is upbeat and literate, focusing on bestsellers as well as new discoveries.” BookPage can also be accessed through the internet at www.bookpage.com

“The Michigan Reads! Program seeks to highlight the importance of reading and sharing books with children, especially toddlers through early elementary, and to recognize the vital role of libraries which provide access to quality books, programs and services to children and families that lay the foundation for reading and school success.”
The book selected for 2008 is “Raccoon Tune” by Nancy Shaw. The Pigeon District Library will host a special event on Thursday, October 2 from 5:30 to 6:30 PM for the Preschool through second grade children and their families to attend. The event will include the reading of the book “Raccoon Tune, a “raccoon” craft and game, and refreshments. Children may come in their night clothes (pajamas) and join us for some raccoon fun!

OCTOBER USED BOOK SALE
The Friends of the Pigeon District Library will be having its October Used Book Sale on Saturday, October 4, 2008, in the Reference Room of the library from 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM. Prices range from $.25 to $3.00. Also, don’t forget the On-Going Used Paperback Sale. Paperback books are always available on the bookshelf to the right of the aquarium to the Children’s Room.

The Pigeon District Library is hosting a Passport Fair on Tuesday, October 14th from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the library’s Community Room. Applicants will need two recent passport photos (available at the library fair) and a certified copy of their birth certificate (with raised seal) to be submitted with the application. The birth certificate will be returned with your passport.
Identification is required in the form of a driver’s license, previous passport, military identification or Secretary of State ID.
Processing fee payments must be paid by check or money order to SEPT OF STATE FOR $67.00.
Postal fees can be paid with cash, money order or check to POSTMASTER FOR $45.00 which includes the required passport photos.
Passport applications are available at the Pigeon District Library, Pigeon Post Office, Unionville Post Office, or online at http://travel.state.gov and can be filled out in advance or at the Passport Fair. AUTHOR JANIS STEIN COMING!
The library staff would like to invite the public to a program that will be presented by Janis Stein, author of “Schools of Yesteryear.” After the program, the author will hold a book signing. This event will take place on October 16th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

The week of September 27 through October 4, 2008, marks the 27th anniversary of Banned Books Week, American Library Association’s annual celebration of the freedom to read.
If we want to continue to protect our First Amendment, we should keep in mind the words of Noam Chomsky:
