NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS-“THE BIG READ”

“The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment.” The Pigeon District Library recently received 14 audio guides that are introductions to specific works of literature.

FEE WAIVED STUDENT LIBRARY CARD

Card Fees will be waived for students who live outside the library service area but attend a school (through grade 12) that is located in any of the six townships we serve-Caseville, Chandler, Fairhaven, McKinley, Oliver, and Winsor.

1) For the card fee to be waived, student I.D. or other proof of pupil status will needed at time of registration.

2) A special Limited Use card will be issued to allow such a student to check out Accelerated Reader materials or teacher-specified materials from the Pigeon District Library.

DON’T FORGET YOUR LIBRARY CARD

To prevent errors from occurring, library patrons are required to present their library card or driver’s license when checking out library materials. If you are having someone else pick up your library items, you must give that person your library card or call ahead of time to let us know who will be picking up your library materials.

USED BOOK SALE

The Friends of the Pigeon District Library will be having its September Used Book Sale on Saturday, September 6, 2008. in the Reference Room of the library from
10:00 AM – 11:30 AM. Prices range from $.25 to $3.00. Also, don’t forget the On-Going Used Paperback Sale. Paperback books are always available on the bookshelf to the right of the aquarium in the Children’s Room.

SATURDAY LIBRARY HOURS

Starting September 6, Saturday hours will return to the regular Saturday hours of
9 AM – 3 PM. Weekday hours remain unchanged: Monday and Friday 9 AM – 5 PM;
Tuesday and Thursday 9 AM – 7 PM.

LAP-SIT STORY TIME AND PRE-SCHOOL STORY HOUR

“School” will be the theme held on Tuesday, September 2, 2008. Usually one half-hour session is held for Lap-Sit Story Time each Tuesday at 10:00 AM with parent and child attending the story time and Pre-School Story Hour is held each Tuesday at 10:30 AM. In both sessions, children listen to stories and participate in finger plays, songs and crafts. There is no cost for this service and new families are always welcome. The Library will be closed on Labor Day, Monday, September 1st. The library will reopen at its regular time of 9 AM on Tuesday, September 2nd.

PRE-SCHOOL GRADUATION

The Pigeon District Library held a graduation ceremony during story hour on August 19 for the children who will be attending DK or Kindergarten this fall. Twelve adults and 12 children were in attendance. The graduates were Pinkney Barrios, Savannah Beachy, Grace Bowen, and Isabel McCleary. Each graduate received a diploma for completing story hour. Guest speakers for the event were Officer Tom Morneau and Deputy Charlie Do Right from the Huron County’s Sheriff Department. Their topic was on safety and after their presentation, Deputy Do Right received hugs from the children.

ALADDIN ELECTRONIC COLOR MAGNIFIER FOR CHECK-OUT

The staff at the Pigeon District Library would like their patrons to know that there is a Aladdin Electronic Color Magnifier available for a one month check-out.

The magnifier will allow all patrons to read library materials. It can be used to assist with viewing family photos, or to read small print often found when looking up information in the newspaper.

The Aladdin Magnifier is very easy to use, is portable and compact. The library staff will be happy to give a demonstration and then you will see how easy it is to operate.

PASSPORT FAIR - AUGUST 12

The Pigeon District Library, 7236 Nitz St., Pigeon MI, will host a Passport Fair on Tuesday, August 12 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm in its Community Room.

Anyone interested in applying for a passport will need to bring proof of identity, proof of citizenship, and cash, check or money order for payment of the processing fee of $75.00 and the postal fee of $40.00 which includes two passport photos.

Passport applications are available at the Pigeon District Library, Pigeon Post Office, Unionville Post Office, or online at http://travel.state.gov and can be filled out in advance or at the Passport Fair.

“WE THE PEOPLE BOOKSHELF”

The Pigeon District Library will be presenting its third book reading from the “We the People Bookshelf” collection. The story that will be presented is “Pink and Say” by Patricia Polacco. “Say Curtis describes his meeting with Pinkus Aylee, a black soldier, during the Civil War, and their capture by Southern troops.” This presentation is scheduled for August 14 at 4:00 PM and is appropriate for children in grades 1-4. All the “We the People Bookshelf” programs are open to the public and will be conducted in the library’s community room.

LAP-SIT STORY TIME AND PRE-SCHOOL STORY HOUR

“Graduation Day” will be held on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at 10:00 AM. Officer Tom from the Huron County Sheriff’s department and his friend Charlie will present a program for story hour children and their families.
Normally one half-hour session is held for Lap-Sit Story Time each Tuesday at
10:00 AM with parent and child attending the Story Time, and Pre-School Story Hour is held each Tuesday at 10:30 AM. In both sessions, children listen to stories and participate in finger plays, songs and crafts. For more information please call the library and ask for Jane Himmel.

ACCELERATED READER SUMMER COMPUTER LAB

Once again the Laker Elementary and Junior high students (grades K-8) will be able to take their AR tests during the summer. The AR tests may be taken at the Junior High Computer Lab from 9:00 AM to NOON on Wednesdays: August 13 and 20th.

-Rental days for videos and DVDs are actual calendar days, not days the library is open.

PARADE ENTRY

The library staff is proud to announce that the children from Story Hour and the Summer Reading Program placed first in the “Grooviest Festival Theme” in the Children’s Parade on Friday, July 25th. The staff would like to thank all family members that were able to participate in this fun event!

QUILT SHOW

The Pigeon District Library Quilt Show had a total of 355 registered visitors who came to view the 28 quilts on display. Visitors came from many parts of Michigan, and from the states of Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, New York, Ohio, and Virginia.

ANNUAL USED BOOK SALE

The Friends of the Pigeon District Library are very grateful for the patrons who supported the library through donations of used books which were placed in the Annual Book Sale during the Farmers’ Festival. The proceeds from the book sale will benefit the library through the friends group.

Thank you “Quilt Show Greeters and friends of the Library Volunteers” for helping make this year’s Quilt Show and Used Book Sale a success.
