LAP-SIT STORY TIME AND PRE-SCHOOL STORY HOUR

One half-hour session is held for Lap-Sit Story Time each Tuesday at 10:00 AM with parent and child attending the Story Time and Pre-School Story Hour is held each Tuesday at 10:30 AM. In both sessions, children listen to stories and participate in finger plays, songs and crafts. There is no cost for this service and new families are always welcome. On Tuesday, October 19th, preschoolers through grade 2 and family members are invited to attend our Michigan Reads! Family Event. This event will start at 5:00 PM in the library’s Community Room. Search this database to find detailed company and industry news and information. Patrons are able to access this database from home if they have internet access and are a Michigan resident or have access to a Michigan library.

The Pigeon District Library Board of Trustees will meet Thursday, October 28 at 4:30 PM in the library’s Community Room. The meeting is open to the public.

“Hiccup is a Viking teenager who aspires to hunt dragons, but doesn't exactly fit in with his tribe's longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers. His world gets turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges him and his fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view.”
The movie will be shown on the 7 foot by 7 foot screen in the library’s Community Room. Popcorn is provided and movie goers may bring their own, non-alchoholic beverages.

BANNED BOOKS WEEK: CELEBRATING THE FREEDOM TO READ
The week of September 25 through October 2 marks the 29th Anniversary of Banned Books Week. Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted banning of books across the United States.

SEPTEMBER IS LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH
The American Library Association (ALA) is pleased to have NBA Champion and Olympic Gold medalist Dwyane Wade as honorary chair for Library Card Sign-up Month. Dwyane says “The library card is the smartest card in my wallet. Sign up for yours today.” It is very easy to sign up for a library card. Residents and property owners in the townships of Caseville, Chandler, Fairhaven, McKinley, Oliver, and Winsor, who are three years of age or older, are eligible to register for free library cards. Children under 18 years of age must have the application signed by a parent or legal guardian.
FEE WAIVED STUDENT LIBRARY CARD
Card Fees will be waived for students outside the library service area but attend a school (through grade 12) that is located in any of the six townships we serve-Caseville, Chandler, Fairhaven, McKinley, Oliver, and Winsor.
1) For the card fee to be waived, student I.D. or other proof of pupil status will be needed at the time of registration.
2) A special Limited Use card will be issued to allow such a student to check out Accelerated Reader materials or teacher-specified materials from the Pigeon District Library.

Income received included $130.00 from Copier, $274.00 from Fines, and $83.00 from Faxes. Interlibrary Loan included 378 items borrowed and 479 items loaned to other libraries. Five Story Hours were held with 107 in attendance. Twenty-six registrations for the month included: Caseville 3, Fairhaven 5, Oliver 6, and Winsor 12.

The August 2010 issue of BookPage has arrived and can be found in the library’s Information Center. A monthly general interest review, BookPage covers the best in new releases. BookPage typically reviews up to 100 of each month’s new fiction, nonfiction, business, children’s, spoken word audio and how-to books. The tone is upbeat and literate, focusing on bestsellers as well as new discoveries.

Residents and property owners in the townships of Caseville, Chandler, Fairhaven, McKinley, Oliver, and Winsor, who are three years of age or older, are eligible to register for free library cards. Children under 18 years of age must have the application signed by a parent or legal guardian.
FEE WAIVED STUDENT LIBRARY CARD
Card Fees will be waived for students outside the library service area but attend a school (through grade 12) that is located in any of the six townships we serve-Caseville, Chandler, Fairhaven, McKinley, Oliver, and Winsor.
1) For the card fee to be waived, student I.D. or other proof of pupil status will be needed at the time of registration.
2) A special Limited Use card will be issued to allow such a student to check out Accelerated Reader materials for teacher-specified materials from the Pigeon District Library.
SATURDAY LIBRARY HOURS
In September, Saturday hours for the library will return to the regular Saturday hours of 9 AM – 3 PM. Weekday hours remain unchanged: Monday and Friday 9 AM – 5 PM; Tuesday and Thursday 9 AM – 7 PM.
LAP-SIT STORY TIME AND PRE-SCHOOL STORY HOUR
“Apples” will be the theme for Tuesday, September 14, 2010. One half-hour session is held for Lap-Sit Story Time each Tuesday at 10:00 AM with parent and child attending the Story Time and Pre-School Story Hour is held each Tuesday at 10:30 AM. In both sessions, children listen to stories and participate in finger plays, songs and crafts. There is no cost for this service and new families are always welcome. ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
During the fall the Pigeon District Library is offering a once-a-month late afternoon program for preschoolers and for children in grades K-2. The program for preschoolers and grades K-2 will include a story, craft, and other activities. These fall programs will take place during the months of September, October, and November. Program Theme: “Bugs, Bats, and Bears—Oh My!” Time of program is 4:00 PM in the library’s Community Room. The schedule for the afternoon program is as follows:
September 14: K-2 Session
October 5: Preschool Session; October 12: K-2 Session
November 2: Preschool Session; November 9: K-2 Session
HURON AREA WRITERS GROUP (HAWG)
The Huron Area Writers Group will hold their monthly meeting on September 16, 2010 in the Community Room of the library at 6:30 PM. All writers, no matter what skill level, are invited to the HAWG meeting.
BOOK CLUB
The book for discussion at the September meeting will be “The Last Child” by John Hart. The next scheduled meeting is Tuesday, September 28 at 6:30 PM. If you or someone you know would like to join us for a discussion on this book, please call the library and ask for Jane Himmel.
MICHIGAN ELECTRONIC LIBRARY (MeL)
The Michigan eLibrary (http://mel.org/) provides all Michigan residents with free access to online full-text articles, full-text books, digital images, and other valuable research information at any time via the Internet; and provides an easy-to-use interlibrary loan system to allow Michigan residents to borrow books and other library materials for free from participating Michigan libraries.
You can access the MeL databases, through our library website at http://www.pigeondistrictlibrary.com/. Click on the MeL (Michigan eLibrary) link which is located in the middle of our homepage. From the next screen click on “MeL Databases” to view the list of 50+ databases which are listed in alphabetical order.
Each week the Pigeon District Library will introduce one of the databases in the Michigan eLibrary. The database chosen for this week is “ArticleFirst.”
“ArticleFirst” is recommended for Colleges and Universities. It is index only and contains articles and other items listed on the table of contents pages of journals. Patrons are able to access this database from home if they have internet access and are a Michigan resident or have access to a Michigan library.
BOOKPAGE
The August 2010 issue of BookPage has arrived and can be found in the library’s Information Center. A monthly general interest review, BookPage covers the best in new releases. BookPage typically reviews up to 100 of each month’s new fiction, nonfiction, business, children’s, spoken word audio and how-to books. The tone is upbeat and literate, focusing on bestsellers as well as new discoveries.
