QUILT SHOW
The Pigeon District Library Quilt Show had a total of 257 registered visitors who came to view the 45 quilts and quilted items on display. Visitors came from many parts of Michigan, and from the states of Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, and Virginia.

ANNUAL USED BOOK SALE
The Friends of the Pigeon District Library are very grateful for the patrons who supported the library through donations of used books which were placed in the Annual Book Sale during the Farmer’s Festival. The proceeds amounted to $1,081.25 and will benefit the library through the friends group.

USED BOOK SALE
There will be no Used Book Sale on Saturday, August 1, 2009. The Friends of the Pigeon District Library will be having a Used Book Sale in September. Also, don’t forget the On-Going Used Paperback Sale. Paperback books are always available on the book shelf to the right of the aquarium in the Children’s Room.

LAP-SIT STORY TIME AND PRE-SCHOOL STORY HOUR
“Smile” will be the theme on Tuesday, August 4, 2009. One half hour session is held for Lap-Sit Story Time each Tuesday at 10:00 AM with parent and child attending the Story Time and Pre-School Story Hour is held each Tuesday at 10:30 AM. In both sessions, children listen to stories and participate in finger plays, songs and crafts. For more information, please call the library and ask for Jane Himmel.

BOOK CLUB
The book for discussion at the August meeting will be “America, America” by Ethan Canin. The next scheduled meeting is Tuesday, August 25 at 6:30 PM. If you or someone you know would like to join us for a discussion on this book, please call the library and ask for Jane Himmel.

2009 SUMMER READING PROGRAM
One hundred and Twenty-two children have registered for the Summer Reading Program: DK-2 , Kindergarten-10, Grade 1-17, Grade 2-23, Grade 3-19,Grade 4-9,Grade 5-18,Grade 6-14, Grade 7-8, and Grade 8-2. A total of 1,302 books have been read for the Summer Reading Program. When the children meet their contract goals, they will be given several prizes for their efforts.

2009 SUMMER READING PROGRAM PARTY!
The Summer Reading Program Party is scheduled for July 16, at 7:00 PM in the community room of the library. All SRP Participants and their families are invited to attend. If SRP participants and family members are planning to attend the party, please call the library at 453-2341.

LAP-SIT STORY TIME AND PRE-SCHOOL STORY HOUR
There will be no Lap-Sit Story Time or Pre-School Story Hour on July 21, 2009.

ANNUAL USED BOOK SALE
The Friends of the Pigeon District Library will be holding the Annual Used Book Sale in the Reference Room of the library during Farmers’ Festival-Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th from 9 AM to 5 PM and Saturday the 25th from 9 AM to 12 noon. The Friends of the Pigeon District Library are also asking for donations of paper grocery sacks for the book sale. No plastic shopping bags, please. If anyone is interested in volunteering to assist in the set-up of the used book sale, please contact the library for more information.

QUILT SHOW HOURS
Plan to visit our quilt show during the Pigeon Farmers’ Festival. This annual event features hand-made quilted items that are owned and/or made by area residents and takes place in the Community Room of the library. Viewing times are 9-5 on Thursday the 23rd, and Friday the 24th and again from 9-12 noon on Saturday the 25th.

KIDS’ PARADE!
All summer reading program participants and story hour children are invited to walk with us in the Farmers’ Festival Kids’ Parade on Friday, July 24th at 3:00 PM. Line-up for the parade is on Nitz Street by the library. We are asking parade walkers to be at the library by 2:30 PM.

AMNESTY WEEK
Amnesty Week will be held at the Pigeon District Library during Farmer’s Festival Week, July 20th- 25th. Here is your chance to clear your account of fines from overdue books. Overdue books must be returned and you must ask staff at the counter to remove fines from your library account. If something has been lost, you must pay the replacement cost for any lost item.

FARMERS’ FESTIVAL MOVIE
The movie “Coraline” will be shown during the Farmers’ Festival on Friday, July 24 at 10:00 AM in the Children’s Room of the library. “A young girl walks through a secret door in her new home and discovers an alternate version of her life. This parallel reality is eerily similar to her own life, only much better. When the adventure turns dangerous, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness, determination, and bravery to get back home and save her family.” The film is rated “PG” and has a run time of 101 minutes. According to Pigeon District Library’s policy, “Parents are responsible for the safety and well-being of children left at the library. Children under the age of 8 must be attended by a responsible adult.” Please make sure your young child is not left unattended at the movie.

2009 SUMMER READING PROGRAM
Registration for the 2009 Summer Reading Program “Be Creative @ Your Library” has closed. There will be movies, special events, and activities during the months of June and July for Summer Reading Program Participants. There is no charge for the activities, but the library staff asks that the children sign-up for the activities ahead of time. July 9 – 6:00 PM: SRP Talent Show-practice at 5:30 PM, July 11-LAST DAY FOR SUMMER READING PROGRAM. Readers need to return SRP books and book logs on or before July 11.

SUMMER SATURDAY HOURS
During June, July, and August, the library’s Saturday hours will be 9 AM -1 PM. Weekday hours remain unchanged.

QUILT SHOW
We will again be having our Annual Quilt Show during the Pigeon Farmers’ Festival. If you are interested in displaying a quilt that you or someone else has made, please call the library at 453-2341 and ask to speak to Jeanette Bach.
Quilt Show Guidelines

1. Only quilts, comforters, and wall hangings will be accepted for display purposes.

2. Pre-registration is required. Please stop in at the library and pick up a registration form and return it to the library by July 14th.

3. Quilted items which have been previously displayed at the Pigeon District Library may be displayed again after 10 years.

4. If an individual wishes to sell a quilted item, he/she must send a picture of the item along with the registration form.

5. Quilted items for sale will be identified as such and potential buyers will be directed to a bulletin board where the picture of the quilted item will be displayed along with the quilter’s contact information. No money will be collected by the Pigeon District Library staff members and volunteers.
