THURSDAY REFRESHMENTS Cold lemonade and hot coffee are available on Thursdays in the Reference Room of the library. Come and relax with a cup of lemonade or coffee while reading the newspaper or visiting with fellow readers.

LAP-SIT STORY TIME AND PRE-SCHOOL STORY HOUR “Memorial Day” will be the theme for Tuesday, May 22, 2012. Two story times are held each Tuesday. A half-hour Lap-Sit Story Time is held for toddlers at 10:00 AM with parent and child attending the story time and Pre-School Story Hour is held at 10:30 AM. In both sessions, children listen to stories and participate in finger plays, songs, and crafts. There is no cost for this service and new families are always welcome. SUMMER READING PROGRAM KICK-OFF with RONALD McDONALD
– MAY 22
Ronald McDonald will help kick-off our summer reading program on Tuesday, May 22nd at 6:00 PM in the library’s Community Room. Families are invited to attend the event where Ronald will entertain everyone with his jokes and magic tricks. That same evening, children who will be 5 years of age by August 31st and those entering grade K-8 in the fall will be able to sign up for the library’s summer reading program which always is a lot of fun!

2012 SUMMER READING PROGRAM “Dream Big-Read” is the theme for the 2012 Summer Reading Program at the Pigeon District Library. Registration will begin on Monday, May 21st. Enjoy five weeks of summer fun by earning “Dream Dollars” for the books you read and for participating in the activities throughout the program. This program will be open to children age 5 by August 31st through grade 8, who live in the library’s service area or attend a school in the library’s service area.

BOOKPAGE
The May 2012 issue of BookPage has arrived and can be found in the library’s Information Center. “A monthly general interest review, BookPage covers the best in new releases. BookPage typically reviews up to 100 of each month’s new fiction, nonfiction, business, children’s, spoken word audio and how-to books. The tone is upbeat and literate, focusing on bestsellers as well as new discoveries.”

LIBRARY BOARD MEETING The Pigeon District Library Board of Trustees will meet Thursday, May 24 at 4:30 PM in the library’s Community Room. The meeting is open to the public.

FREE PARK & READ STATE PARK PASSES
Back for a fourth summer, the DNR and the Library of Michigan are offering their Park & Read program at more than 400 participating libraries across the state. While checking out a book, Park & Read allows library cardholders to “Check-out” a one-day pass that waives the Recreation Passport entry fee into any Michigan state park or recreation area. This $10 savings also provides a one-time fee access to more than 500 events taking place in state parks throughout the summer, and to make the day even more relaxing, some of the state parks are offering the loan of a hammock. Passes are valid for seven days from checkout and can be used for one day at any one of Michigan’s 98 state parks. Passes are valid for day use only. The program runs through October 1, 2012.

MICHIGAN WEEK – MAY 19-26 “Great Lakes, Great Traditions” is Michigan Week’s Mission to inspire people- at the local level-to embrace, explore and celebrate the history, resources and opportunities that set Michigan apart as an ideal state to work, play and thrive.” Visit the library’s Michigan section, located in the Reference Room to find many local and state historical resources.

MICHIGAN NOTABLE BOOKS-2012 The Library of Michigan has announced the list of the 2012 Michigan Notable Books-20 books highlighting Michigan people, places and events. The list highlights exceptional “Michigan books” published in 2011 that bring attention to Michigan authors and topics. Books that showcase the range of experiences of Michigan’s citizens and life in the Great Lakes by well-established and first-time authors can be found on the list. NEWSBANK Thanks to a grant from the Greater Huron County United Way and funding from Friends of the Pigeon District Library, PDL patrons can access the online, indexed archive for the Huron Daily Tribune from 2001. PDL cardholders will be able to access the text version of the Huron Daily Tribune by clicking on the link in the center of the library’s website and entering the fourteen digit barcode number from their library card. By clicking on the “America’s News Magazines” link, PDL cardholders will have access to archival magazines including “Field and Stream”, “Newsweek”, “Parenting” and other magazines. Besides having access to the Huron Daily Tribune, PDL cardholders will be able to access information on up-to-date national and world news, by clicking on links on the left side of the NewsBank page.
