LAP-SIT STORY TIME AND PRE-SCHOOL STORY HOUR

There will be no Lap-Sit or Story Hour on Tuesday, October 7, 2008.

Usually one half-hour session is held for Lap-Sit Story Time each Tuesday at 10:00 AM with parent and child attending the story time and Pre-School Story Hour is held each Tuesday at 10:30 AM. In both sessions, children listen to stories and participate in finger plays, songs and crafts. There is no cost for this service and new families are always welcome. BookPage typically reviews up to 100 of each month’s new fiction, nonfiction, business, children’s, spoken word audio and how-to books. The tone is upbeat and literate, focusing on bestsellers as well as new discoveries.” BookPage can also be accessed through the internet at www.bookpage.com

MICHIGAN READS!

“The Michigan Reads! Program seeks to highlight the importance of reading and sharing books with children, especially toddlers through early elementary, and to recognize the vital role of libraries which provide access to quality books, programs and services to children and families that lay the foundation for reading and school success.”

The book selected for 2008 is “Raccoon Tune” by Nancy Shaw. The Pigeon District Library will host a special event on Thursday, October 2 from 5:30 to 6:30 PM for the Preschool through second grade children and their families to attend. The event will include the reading of the book “Raccoon Tune, a “raccoon” craft and game, and refreshments. Children may come in their night clothes (pajamas) and join us for some raccoon fun!

OCTOBER USED BOOK SALE

The Friends of the Pigeon District Library will be having its October Used Book Sale on Saturday, October 4, 2008, in the Reference Room of the library from 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM. Prices range from $.25 to $3.00. Also, don’t forget the On-Going Used Paperback Sale. Paperback books are always available on the bookshelf to the right of the aquarium to the Children’s Room.

PASSPORT FAIR

The Pigeon District Library is hosting a Passport Fair on Tuesday, October 14th from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the library’s Community Room. Applicants will need two recent passport photos (available at the library fair) and a certified copy of their birth certificate (with raised seal) to be submitted with the application. The birth certificate will be returned with your passport.

Identification is required in the form of a driver’s license, previous passport, military identification or Secretary of State ID.

Processing fee payments must be paid by check or money order to SEPT OF STATE FOR $67.00.

Postal fees can be paid with cash, money order or check to POSTMASTER FOR $45.00 which includes the required passport photos.

Passport applications are available at the Pigeon District Library, Pigeon Post Office, Unionville Post Office, or online at http://travel.state.gov and can be filled out in advance or at the Passport Fair. AUTHOR JANIS STEIN COMING!

The library staff would like to invite the public to a program that will be presented by Janis Stein, author of “Schools of Yesteryear.” After the program, the author will hold a book signing. This event will take place on October 16th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

FRIENDS OF THE PIGEON DISTRICT LIBRARY FUNDRAISER

You donate $5. We give you $10 to spend! The Friends of the Pigeon District Library (FOPDL) are selling Community Day Event coupons booklets for $5.00 each. All proceeds go to the Friends of the Pigeon District Library. The sale will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at the Younkers store in the Bay City Mall and other Bon-Ton stores listed in the booklet.

Inside the coupon booklet is one $10 coupon to spend at Younkers or any other Bon-Ton store. Also included are eight 20% off coupons, pre-sale advantages, and bonus buys. Exclusions do apply so check your coupons carefully before shopping. You can even shop before the day of the event and have the store hold your selections until you return to the store on November 10 or later.

The week of September 27 through October 4, 2008, marks the 27th anniversary of Banned Books Week, American Library Association’s annual celebration of the freedom to read.

If we want to continue to protect our First Amendment, we should keep in mind the words of Noam Chomsky:

COFFEE TIME AT THE LIBRARY

The staff at the Pigeon District Library invites you to come to the library and enjoy a cup of coffee while you are reading the newspaper or a magazine or visiting with fellow readers.

This little enjoyment in everyday life will take place on Thursdays in the Reference Room of the library. Come and read and relax with a cup of coffee.

BOOK CLUB

The book club will be meeting on Tuesday, September 30 at 6:30 PM in the Community Room of the library. The book to be discussed is “Sacred Clowns” by Tony Hillerman.

Circulation for the month of August 2008 was 3,195 items, including:

Four Story Hours were held with 52 children in attendance.

Thirty-seven registrations for the month included: Caseville 12, Chandler 1, Fairhaven 4, McKinley 1, Oliver 5, and Winsor 14.

It is very easy to sign up for a library card at the Pigeon District Library. Books, toys, videos, DVDs, educational CDs, and internet access are just a few of the things that are available to you when you have a library card.

Residents and property owners in the townships of Chandler, McKinley, Winsor, Caseville, Fairhaven, and Oliver, who are three years of age or older, are eligible to register for free library cards. Children under 18 years of age must have the application signed by a parent or legal guardian.

FEE WAIVED STUDENT LIBRARY CARD

Card Fees will be waived for students who live outside the library service area but attend a school (through grade 12) that is located in any of the six townships we serve-Caseville, Chandler, Fairhaven, McKinley, Oliver, and Winsor.

1) For the card fee to be waived, student I.D. or other proof of pupil status will needed at time of registration.

2) A special Limited Use card will be issued to allow such a student to check out Accelerated Reader materials or teacher-specified materials from the Pigeon District Library.
