HOLIDAY HOURS AT THE LIBRARY
The Pigeon District Library will close at 12 PM (Noon) on Thursday, December 24, 2009 and will be closed on December 25, 2009. The library will reopen on Saturday, December 26 with its scheduled hours of 9 AM to 3 PM.

In both sessions, children listen to stories and participate in finger plays, songs and crafts. There is no cost for this service and new families are always welcome. TAX BENEFITS OF GIVING TO PIGEON DISTRICT LIBRARY
Michigan Income Tax:
By donating to the Pigeon District Library you can receive up to half of your donation back on your Michigan Income Taxes. You receive a credit of 50% of the contribution directly off your income tax. (Maximum of $100 for single return or $200 for joint return).
Federal Income Tax:
Donations to the Pigeon District Library count as Gifts to Charity in the Federal Tax Code and therefore can be deducted from your income if you itemize your deductions. You get the benefit of deducting entire donation from your income even though you get up to half of it back on your Michigan Income Taxes.

Book donations are being sought for boys and girls in the following age categories: 0-5, 6-9, and 13-16, with the greatest need in the 13-16 category. Books which are donated will be wrapped by library staff and patrons and will be picked up by the Pigeon Area Food Pantry in time to be delivered to children in time for Christmas. December 14th is the last day for book donations for the Giving Tree.

Circulation for the month of November 2009 was 3,418 items, including 1,639 Books, 17 Cameras and Toys, 3 Discovery Packs, 299 DVD Rentals, 422 Videos, 105 Non-Fiction Videos and DVDs, 121 Audio and CD, 56 Periodicals, 248 Internet Users, 16 Puzzles, and 543 New Materials Check-Outs. Inter-loan statistics included 227 items borrowed and 355 items loaned to other libraries through the Valley Library Consortium. From the MeLCat library system 79 items were borrowed and 26 items loaned and on the Peabody system 5 items were loaned to other libraries. Income received included $139.15 from Copier, $232.00 from Fines, $66.00 from Faxes. Four Story Hours were held with 44 in attendance. Twenty-four registrations for the month included: Caseville 4, Fairhaven 3, McKinley 1, Oliver 7, and Winsor 9.

Military Mailing Day Support Appreciated
Thank you to everyone who supported our Military Mailing Day on September 25th. Pigeon Postmaster Peggy Hoppe and volunteers assembled gift packages for service men and women in the library’s Community Room. The post office provided the flat rate mailing boxes and tape. Monetary donations covered the cost of mailing the seventy-six boxes that were packed.
Thank you to Joy Leipprandt for coordinating the project at Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Schools, to Steve Langford at Independent Bank for receiving and recording the monetary donations, and to Pigeon District Library for providing the work space and for the refreshments for the volunteers. Candace will “let Americans know that a library card is the ‘smartest card’ in every wallet.” It is very easy to sing up for a library card. Residents and property owners in the townships of Chandler, McKinley, Winsor, Caseville, Fairhaven, and Oliver, who are three years of age or older, are eligible to register for free library cards. Children under 18 years of age must have the application signed by a parent or legal guardian.

The Pigeon District Library is hosting a Passport Fair on Thursday, September 17th from 1:30 PM to 6:00 PM in the library’s Community Room. An adult passport including the picture is $115.00. If you bring a picture of yourself, the cost is $100.00, but the picture must be acceptable. A child’s passport is $65.00, but is only good for 5 years. Prospective consumers need to bring their birth certificate with the embossed seal and a picture ID, like a driver’s license. Check or cash are the acceptable methods of payment.

In response to the Governor’s Executive Order closing the Library of Michigan, the Pigeon District Library will join other libraries across Michigan and close its doors on Thursday, September 10, 2009 so staff can attend an event promoted by the Michigan Library Association and the Michigan Library Consortium.
The September 10th Rally will demonstrate to officials in Lansing that libraries are important to people and their daily lives. Organizers hope to convince legislators to maintain $10 million in state aid to libraries and to support efforts to keep the Library of Michigan as a whole unit with the state government. The goal, also, is to convince the Governor to include library officials on the planning committee which will determine the use of the building and collections currently housed in the Michigan Historical Center and Library of Michigan building.

If you bring a picture of yourself, the cost is $100.00, but the picture must be acceptable. A child’s passport is $65.00, but is only good for 5 years. Prospective consumers need to bring their birth certificate with the embossed seal and a picture ID, like a driver’s license. Check or cash are the acceptable methods of payment.

The Pigeon District Library held a graduation ceremony during story hour on August 18 for the children who will be going to DK or Kindergarten this fall. 14 Adults and 12 children were in attendance. The graduates were Ashlee Guigar, Hannah Helmuth, Hannah Keim, Kami Maust, and Katie Turner. Each graduate received a diploma for completing story hour. Guest speakers for the event were Officer Tom Morneau and Deputy Charlie Do Right from the Huron County’s Sheriff Department. Their topic was on safety and after their presentation Deputy Do Right received hugs from the children.

Inter-loan statistics included 317 items borrowed and 339 items loaned to other libraries through the Valley Library Consortium. From the MeLCat library system 41 items were borrowed and 47 items loaned and on the Peabody system 5 items were loaned to other libraries. Income received included $132.45 from Copier, $188.05 from Fines, $50.00 from Faxes. Five Story Hours were held with 117 in attendance. Seventy-one registrations for the month included: Caseville 23, Chandler 5, Fairhaven 7, McKinley 5, Oliver 16, Winsor 14 and 1 from other townships.

The Pigeon District Library Quilt Show had a total of 257 registered visitors who came to view the 45 quilts and quilted items on display. Visitors came from many parts of Michigan, and from the states of Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, and Virginia.

2009 SUMMER READING PROGRAM
One hundred and Twenty-two children have registered for the Summer Reading Program: DK-2 , Kindergarten-10, Grade 1-17, Grade 2-23, Grade 3-19,Grade 4-9,Grade 5-18,Grade 6-14, Grade 7-8, and Grade 8-2. A total of 1,302 books have been read for the Summer Reading Program. When the children meet their contract goals, they will be given several prizes for their efforts.

Overdue books must be returned and you must ask staff at the counter to remove fines from your library account. If something has been lost, you must pay the replacement cost for any lost item.

The movie “Coraline” will be shown during the Farmers’ Festival on Friday, July 24 at 10:00 AM in the Children’s Room of the library. “A young girl walks through a secret door in her new home and discovers an alternate version of her life. This parallel reality is eerily similar to her own life, only much better. When the adventure turns dangerous, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness, determination, and bravery to get back home and save her family.” The film is rated “PG” and has a run time of 101 minutes. According to Pigeon District Library’s policy, “Parents are responsible for the safety and well-being of children left at the library. Children under the age of 8 must be attended by a responsible adult.” Please make sure your young child is not left unattended at the movie.

Recording of books will be held from June 8 through July 11.Enjoy five weeks of summer fun by earning “Musical Notes” for the books you read and for participating in the activities scheduled throughout the program.
When you register for the Summer Reading Program, you will receive a book bag, bookmark, pencil, SRP guidelines, and a calendar of scheduled events.
This program is open to children who turn 5 by August 31st through grade 8.
