SEPTEMBER IS LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH
The American Library Association (ALA) is pleased to have Olympic gold medalist and 2008 WNBA Rookie of the Year Candace Parker as honorary chair of Library Card Sign-up Month. Candace will “let Americans know that a library card is the ‘smartest card’ in every wallet.” It is very easy to sing up for a library card. Residents and property owners in the townships of Chandler, McKinley, Winsor, Caseville, Fairhaven, and Oliver, who are three years of age or older, are eligible to register for free library cards. Children under 18 years of age must have the application signed by a parent or legal guardian.

BOOKPAGE
The September 2009 issue of BookPage has arrived and can be found in the library’s Information Center. “A monthly general interest review, BookPage covers the best in new releases. BookPage typically reviews up to 100 of each month’s new fiction, nonfiction, business, children’s, spoken word audio and how-to books. The tone is upbeat and literate, focusing on bestsellers as well as new discoveries.

STORY HOUR
“Honey Bees” will be the theme held on Tuesday, September 29, 2009. Usually one half-hour session is held for Lap-Sit Story Time each Tuesday at 10:00 AM with parent and child attending the Story Time and Pre-School Story Hour is held each Tuesday at 10:30 AM. In both sessions, children listen to stories and participate in finger plays, songs and crafts. There is no cost for this service and new families are always welcome. BANNED BOOKS WEEK
The week of September 26 through October 3, 2009 marks the 28th anniversary of Banned Books Week, which is an annual celebration of the freedom to read. “Each year, librarians, booksellers, teachers, and countless others take this opportunity to highlight the importance of intellectual freedom and remind us not to take this precious democratic freedom for granted.

BOOK CLUB
The book for discussion at the September meeting will be “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society” by Mary Ann Shaffer. “January 1946: writer Juliet Ashton receives a letter from a stranger, a founding member of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. And so begins a remarkable tale of the island of Guernsey during the German occupation, and of a society as extraordinary as its name.” The next scheduled meeting is Tuesday, September 29 at 6:30 PM. CIRCULATION
Circulation for the month of August 2009 was 3,890 items, including 1,880 Books, 21 Cameras and Toys, 4 Discovery Packs, 388 DVD Rentals, 208 Audio and CD, 78 Periodicals, 290 Internet Users, 14 Puzzles, and 575 New Material Check-Outs. Three Story Hours were held with 40 in attendance. Twenty-six registrations for the month included: Caseville 8, Chandler 8, Fairhaven 1, McKinley 3, Oliver 3, and Winsor 3.
