2009 SUMMER READING PROGRAM
Registration for the 2009 Summer Reading Program “Be Creative @ Your Library” has closed. There will be movies, special events, and activities during the months of June and July for Summer Reading Program Participants.

There is no charge for the activities, but the library staff asks that the children sign-up for the activities ahead of time. Upcoming events for the reading program include:

As of June 20, 122 children have registered for the Summer Reading Program: DK-2 , Kindergarten-10, Grade 1-17, Grade 2-23, Grade 3-19,Grade 4-9,Grade 5-18,Grade 6-14, Grade 7-8, and Grade 8-2. A total of 987 books have been read for the Summer Reading Program. When the children meet their contract goals, they will be given several prizes for their efforts.

USED BOOK SALE
There will be no Used Book Sale on July 4, 2008. The Friends of the Pigeon District Library are making preparations for the Annual Used Book Sale, which will be held during Farmers’ Festival.

LIBRARY CLOSED
The library will be closed on Saturday, July 4th. The library will reopen at its regular time of 9 AM on Monday, July 6th.

LAP-SIT STORY TIME AND PRE-SCHOOL STORY HOUR
“Cookies” will be the theme on Tuesday, July 7, 2009. Usually one half-hour session is held for Lap-Sit Story Time each Tuesday at 10:00 AM with parent and child attending the story time and Pre-School Story Hour is held each Tuesday at 10:30 AM. In both sessions, children listen to stories and participate in finger plays, songs and crafts. There is no cost for this service and new families are always welcome. For more information, please call the library at 453-2341 and ask for Jane Himmel.

During June, July, and August, the library’s Saturday hours will be 9 AM -1 PM. Weekday hours remain unchanged.

QUILT SHOW
We will again be having our Annual Quilt Show during the Pigeon Farmers’ Festival. If you are interested in displaying a quilt that you or someone else has made, please call the library at 453-2341 and ask to speak to Jeanette Bach.
Quilt Show Guidelines
1. Only quilts, comforters, and wall hangings will be accepted for display purposes.
2. Pre-registration is required. Please stop in at the library and pick up a registration form and return it to the library by July 14th.
3. Quilted items which have been previously displayed at the Pigeon District Library may be displayed again after 10 years.
4. If an individual wishes to sell a quilted item, he/she must send a picture of the item along with the registration form.
5. Quilted items for sale will be identified as such and potential buyers will be directed to a bulletin board where the picture of the quilted item will be displayed along with the quilter’s contact information. No money will be collected by the Pigeon District Library staff members and volunteers.

The Pigeon District Library Board of Trustees will hold its annual board meeting on Thursday, June 25, 2009 beginning at 4:30 PM in the library’s Community Room. The meeting is open to the public.

AUTHOR VISIT
Twenty-Eight people were in attendance to meet and greet Jacki Howard, author of “The Thumb Point Fingers”, on Tuesday, May 26th. During the presentation, the author told the group why she felt she needed to write the book. She also shared her style of writing and how information for the book was documented. A question and answer period was held after the presentation with the author signing copies of her books at the end of the evening.

CIRCULATION
Circulation for the month of April 2008 was 3,308 items, including 1,719 Books, 21 Cameras and Toys, 3 Discovery Packs, 320 DVD Rentals, 242 Videos, 52 Non-Fiction Videos and DVDs, 154 Audio and CD, 86 Periodicals, 262 Internet Users, 26 Puzzles, and 423 New Material Check-Outs. Income received included $171.95 from Copier, $384.00 from DVD Rentals, $182.80 from Fines, $47.00 from Faxes. Four Story Hours were held with 54 in attendance. Fourteen registrations for the month included: Caseville 4, Chandler 1, Fairhaven 2, Oliver 2, and Winsor 5.
