USED BOOK SALE

The Friends of the Pigeon District Library will be having its November Used Book Sale on Saturday, November 1, 2008 in the reference room of the library from 10:00 AM – 11:30 PM. Prices range from $.25 to $3.00. Also, don’t forget the On-Going Used Paperback Sale. Paperback books are always available on the bookshelf to the right of the aquarium in the Children’s Room.

LAP-SIT STORY TIME AND PRE-SCHOOL STORY HOUR

“Cookie Monster” will be the theme held on Tuesday, November 4, 2008.

Usually one half-hour session is held for Lap-Sit Story Time each Tuesday at 10:00 AM with parent and child attending the story time and Pre-School Story Hour is held each Tuesday at 10:30 AM. In both sessions, children listen to stories and participate in finger plays, songs and crafts. There is no cost for this service and new families are always welcome. Starting Nov. 4, the library will be closing at 6 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The library hours will be

Friday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and

Saturday 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF MICHIGAN 2008 VOTING GUIDE

Copies of the League of Women Voters of Michigan 2008 Nonpartisan Voter Guide are available at the library to assist voters as they prepare for the General Election which will be held on Tuesday, November 4.

“The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization established in 1920 to encourage citizen participation in government. It never supports or opposes any political party or candidates.”

USBORNE BOOK FAIR

The Friends of the Pigeon District Library will be hosting an Usborne Book Fair on
Thursday, November 6th from 2 PM -6 PM and Friday, November 7th from
10 AM – 5 PM.

COFFEE TIME AT THE LIBRARY

Hot coffee and tea are available on Thursdays in the Reference Room of the library. Come and relax with a cup of coffee or tea while reading the newspaper or visiting with fellow readers.

CHRISTMAS SWEATSHIRTS

The library staff is ordering Holiday Sweatshirts. The price will be around $15.00 per sweatshirt. If you are interested in ordering one or more, information and order forms can be found on the table of the library’s information center.

Orders must be placed by October 29th.

LIBRARY BOARD MEETING

The Pigeon District Library Board of Trustees will meet on Thursday, October 23, 2008 at 4:30 PM in the library’s Community Room. The meeting is open to the public.

CONGRATULATIONS FOPDL!

Congratulations to the Friends of the Pigeon District Library (FOPDL) for winning First Place in the Scarecrow Contest that the Pigeon Chamber of Commerce organized for the Fall Harvest Celebration. The FOPDL donated the prize money to the library’s story hour so it could be used for an upcoming special event.

TEEN READ WEEK

Teen Read Week 2008 is Oct. 12-18, and the theme will be “Books with Bite @ your library!” Teens will be encouraged to “sink their teeth” into a good book when visiting the library and pick up some of the handouts for the teens to pick up at the library’s Circulation Desk.

Teens are invited to the library for a special Teen Read Week Event on Thursday, October 16 from 3:30-4:30 PM in the library’s Community Room. Led by Library Director Jeanette Bach, teens will have the opportunity to share in the discussion of selected readings from the book, “Abraham Lincoln the Writer: A Treasury of His Greatest Speeches and Letters” from the “We the People” Bookshelf. Snack will be served and teens attending the event will have the opportunity to win a gift card to Little Caesar’s Pizza.

AUTHOR JANIS STEIN COMING!

On Thursday, October 16 at 5 PM, the public is invited to the library’s Community Room to hear Janis Stein, local author of “Schools of Yesteryear”, make a short presentation about her book.

Following her presentation, Ms. Stein will be available until 7 PM for book sales and signings.

“HARVEST” FAMILY PROGRAM

Get ready to have some fun when Raymond and Susan Bugg return to the library to host a program for the entire family on Tuesday, October 21 at 5 PM in the library’s Community Room. Be prepared to laugh as the Buggs entertain you with songs of the season, jokes, stories, and other “silliness”.

The Fall 2008 Consumer Information catalog has arrived and can be found in the library’s Information Center which is located near the Nitz Street entrance.

The sixteen-page catalog lists free and low-cost information on cats, computers, education, employment, family, federal programs, food, health, housing, money, small business, travel, and more.
