SATURDAY LIBRARY HOURS
Saturday hours for the library have returned to the regular Saturday hours of 9 AM – 3 PM. Weekday hours remain unchanged: Monday and Friday 9 AM – 5 PM; Tuesday and Thursday 9 AM – 7 PM.

BANNED BOOKS WEEK: CELEBRATING THE FREEDOM TO READ
The week of September 25 through October 2 marks the 29th Anniversary of Banned Books Week. Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted banning of books across the United States.

LAP-SIT STORY TIME AND PRE-SCHOOL STORY HOUR
“Johnny Appleseed” will be the theme for Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 10:30 AM for both sessions to attend. Usually one half-hour session is held for Lap-Sit Story Time each Tuesday at 10:00 AM with parent and child attending the Story Time and Pre-School Story Hour is held each Tuesday at 10:30 AM. In both sessions, children listen to stories and participate in finger plays, songs and crafts. There is no cost for this service and new families are always welcome. BOOK CLUB
The book for discussion at the September meeting will be “The Last Child” by John Hart. The next scheduled meeting is Tuesday, September 28 at 6:30 PM. If you or someone you know would like to join us for a discussion on this book, please call the library and ask for Jane Himmel.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
During the fall the Pigeon District Library is offering a once-a-month late afternoon program for preschoolers and for children in grades K-2. The program for preschoolers and grades K-2 will include a story, craft, and other activities. These fall programs will take place during the months of September, October, and November. Please call at 453-2341 for further information.

Program Theme: “Bugs, Bats, and Bears—Oh My!” Time of program is 4:00 PM in the library’s Community Room. The schedule for the afternoon program is as follows:
Bats-October 5: Preschool Session; Bats-October 12: K-2 Session
Bears-November 2: Preschool Session; Bears-November 9: K-2 Session

LET THE READING ADVENTURE BEGIN!
“Reading together from the start is one of the most important things you can do to help your child succeed in school and life.” Michigan Reads! One-State, One Book is generously sponsored by Target through the Library of Michigan. The book selected this year is “The Runaway Garden” by Jeffrey L. Schatzer. MICHIGAN ELECTRONIC LIBRARY (MeL)
The Michigan eLibrary (http://mel.org) provides all Michigan residents with free access to online full-text articles, full-text books, digital images, and other valuable research information at any time via the Internet; and provides an easy-to-use interlibrary loan system to allow Michigan residents to borrow books and other library materials for free from participating Michigan libraries.

You can access the MeL databases, through our library website at www.pigeondistrictlibrary.com. Click on the MeL (Michigan eLibrary) link which is located in the middle of our homepage. From the next screen click on “MeL Databases” to view the list of 50+ databases which are listed in alphabetical order.

Each week the Pigeon District Library will introduce one of the databases in the Michigan eLibrary. The database chosen for this week is “Books & Authors.”
This database is recommended for the general user and reading advice. It is also a database to help you decide what to read next. You can search by character, topic, setting, time period, genre, title, author, and series. The database Includes over 140,000 titles, 50,000 authors, and thousands of read-alike, award winner, and librarian's favorites lists. Titles include both fiction and non-fiction. Patrons are able to access this database from home if they have internet access and are a Michigan resident or have access to a Michigan library.
