SEPTEMBER IS LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH
The American Library Association (ALA) is pleased to have NBA Champion and Olympic Gold medalist Dwyane Wade as honorary chair for Library Card Sign-up Month. Dwyane says “The library card is the smartest card in my wallet. Sign up for yours today.” It is very easy to sign up for a library card. Residents and property owners in the townships of Caseville, Chandler, Fairhaven, McKinley, Oliver, and Winsor, who are three years of age or older, are eligible to register for free library cards. Children under 18 years of age must have the application signed by a parent or legal guardian.
FEE WAIVED STUDENT LIBRARY CARD
Card Fees will be waived for students outside the library service area but attend a school (through grade 12) that is located in any of the six townships we serve-Caseville, Chandler, Fairhaven, McKinley, Oliver, and Winsor.
1) For the card fee to be waived, student I.D. or other proof of pupil status will be needed at the time of registration.
2) A special Limited Use card will be issued to allow such a student to check out Accelerated Reader materials or teacher-specified materials from the Pigeon District Library.
Saturday Library Hours
Saturday hours for the library have returned to the regular Saturday hours of 9 AM – 3 PM. Weekday hours remain unchanged: Monday and Friday 9 AM – 5 PM; Tuesday and Thursday 9 AM – 7 PM.
LAP-SIT STORY TIME AND PRE-SCHOOL STORY HOUR
“Apple Orchard Tour” will be the theme for Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at 10:30 AM for both sessions to attend. Usually one half-hour session is held for Lap-Sit Story Time each Tuesday at 10:00 AM with parent and child attending the Story Time and Pre-School Story Hour is held each Tuesday at 10:30 AM. In both sessions, children listen to stories and participate in finger plays, songs and crafts. There is no cost for this service and new families are always welcome. ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
During the fall the Pigeon District Library is offering a once-a-month late afternoon program for preschoolers and for children in grades K-2. The program for preschoolers and grades K-2 will include a story, craft, and other activities. These fall programs will take place during the months of September, October, and November. Please call at 453-2341 for further information.
Program Theme: “Bugs, Bats, and Bears—Oh My!” Time of program is 4:00 PM in the library’s Community Room. The schedule for the afternoon program is as follows:
Bats-October 5: Preschool Session; Bats-October 12: K-2 Session
Bears-November 2: Preschool Session; Bears-November 9: K-2 Session
BOOK CLUB
The book for discussion at the September meeting will be “The Last Child” by John Hart. The next scheduled meeting is Tuesday, September 28 at 6:30 PM. If you or someone you know would like to join us for a discussion on this book, please call the library and ask for Jane Himmel.
MICHIGAN ELECTRONIC LIBRARY (MeL)
The Michigan eLibrary (http://mel.org) provides all Michigan residents with free access to online full-text articles, full-text books, digital images, and other valuable research information at any time via the Internet; and provides an easy-to-use interlibrary loan system to allow Michigan residents to borrow books and other library materials for free from participating Michigan libraries.
You can access the MeL databases, through our library website at www.pigeondistrictlibrary.com. Click on the MeL (Michigan eLibrary) link which is located in the middle of our homepage. From the next screen click on “MeL Databases” to view the list of 50+ databases which are listed in alphabetical order.
Each week the Pigeon District Library will introduce one of the databases in the Michigan eLibrary. The database chosen for this week is “Biography and Genealogy Master Index”. This database is recommended for: Genealogy and is index only. Biography and Genealogy Master Index (BGMI) indexes current, readily available reference sources, as well as the most important retrospective works that cover individuals, both living and deceased, from every field of activity and from all areas of the world. The database has Bibliographic citations only. There are no full-text articles. Patrons are able to access this database from home is they have internet access and are a Michigan resident or have access to a Michigan library.
CIRCULATION
Circulation for the month of August 2010 was 3,926 items including 2,178 Books, 27 toys, 4 Discovery Packs, 256 DVD Rentals, 372 Video Checkouts, 163 Audio, Books on CD and Playaways, 83 Magazines, 246 Internet Users, 2 Puzzles, 1 AV Equipment, 552 New Materials, and 42 NF Videos and DVDs. Income received included $130.00 from Copier, $274.00 from Fines, and $83.00 from Faxes. Interlibrary Loan included 378 items borrowed and 479 items loaned to other libraries. Five Story Hours were held with 107 in attendance. Twenty-six registrations for the month included: Caseville 3, Fairhaven 5, Oliver 6, and Winsor 12.
