LET THE READING ADVENTURE BEGIN!
“Reading together from the start is one of the most important things you can do to help your child succeed in school and life.” Michigan Reads! One-State, One Book is generously sponsored by Target through the Library of Michigan. The book selected this year is “Memoirs of a Goldfish” by Devin Scillian. For more information, visit www.michigan.gov/michiganreads.
On Monday, November 7, preschoolers through grade 2 and family members are invited to attend our Michigan Reads! Family Event. This event will start at 4:00 PM in the library’s Community Room. Pre-registration is required for this event. Attendance is limited to the first fifteen families to register. Please stop by the library to register or call 989-453-2341. Enjoy FREE snacks, fun and festivities featuring the book “Memoirs of a Goldfish.”

STORY HOUR
“Bring Your Bear Day” will be the theme for story hour on Tuesday, November 8, 2011. PreSchool Story Hour is held each Tuesday at 10:30 AM. Children listen to stories and participate in finger plays, songs and crafts. There is no cost for this service and new families are always welcome. For more information, please call the library at 453-2341 and ask for Jane Himmel

MILITARY MAILING DAY
Military Mailing is a collaborative effort of the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Schools, Pigeon District Library, Pigeon Post Office, and Pigeon Rotary. Our next Military Mailing Day is scheduled for Tuesday, November 8 from 1 PM – 5 PM in the library’s Community Room. Volunteers, under the direction of Pigeon Postmaster Peggy Hoppe, will assemble gift packages for service men and women. If you are interested in helping with this event, please call the library at 989-453-2341 to have your name added to the volunteer list.

Donated items may be dropped off at the library during business hours. Items will be shipped in flat rate mailing boxes at the rate of $10.95 each and donations to cover the cost of mailing a box are always welcome. When this is done, a note is included in the box to inform the service man or woman who covered the cost of mailing that box. Monetary donations to help cover the cost of mailing the boxes may be left with Michelle Hill at Thumb National Bank in Pigeon.

Last fall one hundred thirty-seven boxes were packed and mailed. This year, the group hopes to surpass that number and with your help, we will be able to.

You may pick up or view a list of items that can be donated for Military Mailing by visiting the library or viewing the list at the library’s web site www.pigeondistrictlibrary.com. Look for the link on the right side of our homepage. Thank you for your support!

PAWS FOR READING
A new program for young readers is set to begin on Monday, November 14th at 4:00 PM in the library’s Community Room. Intended for children in grades 1-3 who are reluctant readers, “Paws for Reading” encourages children to read by providing a non-judgmental listener and furry friend to read to that won’t laugh at them if they make a mistake or stumble over a word, but rather lies next to them and enjoys the story being read to him.

A child who signs up for the program will spend ten minutes reading aloud to the therapy dog (and his handler). If this is something that your child would like to do, please call the library at 453-2341 to sign-up for an available time slot.

The library currently has one therapy dog and its owner who are willing to help with this program. The dog is licensed, certified and insured through Therapy Dogs, Inc. If you own a therapy dog and would be interested in assisting with this program, please call the library at 989-453-2341 and ask to speak with Library Director Jeanette Bach.

POETRY READING AND BOOK SIGNING
Get ready to experience the sheer joy of poetry with award-winning local poet Jane Mayes who is the author of Seeing…Through Nature. On Thursday, November 17 at 3:00 PM, Jane will be reading from her newest book Drawn in Dust and will be available afterwards for a book signing. This event is open to the public and will be held in the library’s Community Room.
