PIGEON DISTRICT LIBRARY

LAP-SIT STORY TIME AND PRE-SCHOOL STORY HOUR
“Leaves” will be the theme for Tuesday, October 19, 2010. One half-hour session is held for Lap-Sit Story Time each Tuesday at 10:00 AM with parent and child attending the Story Time and Pre-School Story Hour is held each Tuesday at 10:30 AM. In both sessions, children listen to stories and participate in finger plays, songs and crafts. There is no cost for this service and new families are always welcome. LET THE READING ADVENTURE BEGIN!
“Reading together from the start is one of the most important things you can do to help your child succeed in school and life.” Michigan Reads! One-State, One Book is generously sponsored by Target through the Library of Michigan. The book selected this year is “The Runaway Garden” by Jeffrey L. Schatzer. For more information, visit www.michigan.gov/michiganreads. The Pigeon District Library is busy making plans for a very special Michigan Reads! Family Event in October.

On Tuesday, October 19th, preschoolers through grade 2 and family members are invited to attend our Michigan Reads! Family Event. This event will start at 5:00 PM in the library’s Community Room. Monday, November 18th is the last day to register for this event. Attendance is limited to the first twenty-five families to register. Please stop by the library to register or call 989-453-2341. Enjoy FREE food, fun and festivities featuring the book “The Runaway Garden.”

COMPUTER ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE
Do you need help with word processing, e-mail, or Internet searching? Volunteer Paul Gaeth will be in the Computer Lab in October to give assistance on Thursdays, 21st, and 28th from 4:30 – 6:00 PM.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
During the fall the Pigeon District Library is offering a once-a-month late afternoon program for preschoolers and for children in grades K-2. The program for preschoolers and grades K-2 will include a story, craft, and other activities. These fall programs will continue through November. Please call at 453-2341 for further information.

Program Theme: “Bugs, Bats, and Bears—Oh My!” Time of program is 4:00 PM in the library’s Community Room. The schedule for the afternoon program is as follows:
Bears-November 2: Preschool Session; Bears-November 9: K-2 Session

MICHIGAN ELECTRONIC LIBRARY (MeL)
The Michigan eLibrary (http://mel.org) provides all Michigan residents with free access to online full-text articles, full-text books, digital images, and other valuable research information at any time via the Internet; and provides an easy-to-use interlibrary loan system to allow Michigan residents to borrow books and other library materials for free from participating Michigan libraries.

You can access the MeL databases, through our library website at www.pigeondistrictlibrary.com. Click on the MeL (Michigan eLibrary) link which is located in the middle of our homepage. From the next screen click on “MeL Databases” to view the list of 50+ databases which are listed in alphabetical order.

Each week the Pigeon District Library will introduce one of the databases in the Michigan eLibrary. The database chosen for this week is the “ChiltonLibrary.com”. This database is recommended for the general user and is full text. “ChiltonLibrary.com represents the most authoritative automotive repair information available to car owners. There are thousands of year, make, and model combinations covering the most popular vehicles of the past 30 years, plus additional coverage of specialty models. ChiltonLibrary.com gives you the confidence to service or repair virtually any system on your vehicle.” Patrons are able to access this database from home if they have internet access and are a Michigan resident or have access to a Michigan library.

FREE FAMILY MOVIE
Thursday, October 21 at 4:30 PM.
“How to Train Your Dragon” Rated: PG Time: 98 minutes
“Hiccup is a Viking teenager who aspires to hunt dragons, but doesn't exactly fit in with his tribe's longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers. His world gets turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges him and his fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view.”

The movie will be shown on the 7 foot by 7 foot screen in the library’s Community Room. Popcorn is provided and movie goers may bring their own, non-alchoholic beverages.

LIBRARY BOARD MEETING
The Pigeon District Library Board of Trustees will meet Thursday, October 28 at 4:30 PM in the library’s Community Room. The meeting is open to the public.

LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF MICHIGAN 2010 VOTING GUIDE
Copies of the League of Women Voters of Michigan 2010 Nonpartisan Voter Guide are available at the library to assist voters as they prepare for the General Election which will be held on Tuesday, November 2. “The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.”

CIRCULATION
Circulation for September 2010 was 2,942 items including 1,670 Books, 1 Toy, 6 Discovery Packs, 188 DVD Rentals, 230 Video Checkouts, 71 Audio, Books on CD and Playaways, 51 Magazines, 243 Internet Users, 8 Puzzles, 434 New Materials, and 40 NF Videos and DVDs. Inter-Loan statistics included 313 borrowed and 394 loaned to other libraries through the Valley Library Consortium. From the MeLCat library system 42 items were borrowed and 24 items loaned and on the Peabody system 1 item was loaned to other libraries. Three Story Hours were held with 37 in attendance. Thirty registrations for the month included: Caseville 11, Fairhaven 4, Mckinley 2, Oliver 4, Winsor 8, and 1 limited use card.
