LAP-SIT STORY TIME AND PRE-SCHOOL STORY HOUR
“The Color Orange” will be the theme for Tuesday, October 26, 2010. One half-hour session is held for Lap-Sit Story Time each Tuesday at 10:00 AM with parent and child attending the Story Time and Pre-School Story Hour is held each Tuesday at 10:30 AM. In both sessions, children listen to stories and participate in finger plays, songs and crafts. There is no cost for this service and new families are always welcome. For more information, please call the library at 453-2341 and ask for Jane Himmel.
COMPUTER ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE
Do you need help with word processing, e-mail, or Internet searching? Volunteer Paul Gaeth will be in the Computer Lab to give assistance on Thursday, October 28th from 4:30 – 6:00 PM.
LIBRARY BOARD MEETING
The Pigeon District Library Board of Trustees will meet Thursday, October 28 at 4:30 PM in the library’s Community Room. The meeting is open to the public.
PIGEON DISTRICT LIBRARY MILLAGE RENEWAL PROPOSAL
Shall the Pigeon District Library be authorized to levy a tax annually upon the taxable value of all taxable property within the district of the Pigeon District Library in an amount not to exceed 1.0 mill ($1.00 for each $1,000 of taxable value) for a period of four (4) years, 2011 through 2014, inclusive, to provide funds for all Library purposes authorized by law?
This millage is a renewal of the previously authorized millage of 1.0 mill which will expire following the 2010 levy. This millage is estimated to provide revenues of $158,610 in 2011, the first year of the levy.

LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF MICHIGAN 2010 VOTING GUIDE
Copies of the League of Women Voters of Michigan 2010 Nonpartisan Voter Guide are available at the library to assist voters as they prepare for the General Election which will be held on Tuesday, November 2. “The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.”
ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
During the fall the Pigeon District Library is offering a once-a-month late afternoon program for preschoolers and for children in grades K-2. The program for preschoolers and grades K-2 will include a story, craft, and other activities. These fall programs will continue through November. Please call at 453-2341 for further information.
Program Theme: “Bugs, Bats, and Bears—Oh My!” Time of program is 4:00 PM in the library’s Community Room. The schedule for the afternoon program is as follows:

MILITARY MAILING DAY
Military Mailing is a collaborative effort of the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port Schools, Pigeon District Library, Pigeon Post Office, and Pigeon Rotary. Our next Military Mailing Day is scheduled for Tuesday, November 9th from 1 PM – 5 PM in the library’s Community Room. Volunteers, under the direction of Pigeon Postmaster Peggy Hoppe, will assemble gift packages for service men and women.
The post office provides the flat rate mailing boxes and tape and monetary donations cover the cost of mailing the boxes that will be packed. Donated items may be dropped off at the library. Monetary donations may be left with Steve Langford at the Pigeon branch of Independent Bank. Names and addresses of men and women serving in any branch of the U.S. military may be given to Peggy Hoppe at the Pigeon Post Office.

MICHIGAN ELECTRONIC LIBRARY (MeL)
The Michigan eLibrary (http://mel.org) provides all Michigan residents with free access to online full-text articles, full-text books, digital images, and other valuable research information at any time via the Internet; and provides an easy-to-use interlibrary loan system to allow Michigan residents to borrow books and other library materials for free from participating Michigan libraries.
You can access the MeL databases, through our library website at www.pigeondistrictlibrary.com. Click on the MeL (Michigan eLibrary) link which is located in the middle of our homepage. From the next screen click on “MeL Databases” to view the list of 50+ databases which are listed in alphabetical order.
Each week the Pigeon District Library will introduce one of the databases in the Michigan eLibrary. The database chosen for this week is the “CINAHL Basic.” This database is recommended for the general public and health professionals. CINAHL provides indexing for 2,931 journals with 1,000,000 records dating back to 1981, covering nursing, biomedicine, health sciences librarianship, complementary medicine, consumer health and 17 allied health disciplines. In addition, this database offers indexing to health care books, nursing dissertations, selected conference proceedings, standards of practice, educational software, audiovisuals and book chapters. Searchable cited references for more than 1,200 journals are also included. Full text material includes 70 journals plus legal cases, clinical innovations, critical paths, drug records, research instruments and clinical trials. This database contains only limited full text (70 journals).
Patrons are able to access this database from home if they have internet access and are a Michigan resident or have access to a Michigan library.
