ADULT WINTER READING PROGRAM
The Pigeon District Library’s Adult Winter Reading Program has begun and will end March 15. Patrons who participated last year had a lot of fun, but participation is totally optional. Weekly prize drawings will be held and participants are invited to the end-of-program party in March.

LAP-SIT STORY TIME AND PRE-SCHOOL STORY HOUR
“Puzzle Time” will be the theme for Tuesday, January 25, 2011. One half-hour session is held for Lap-Sit Story Time each Tuesday at 10:00 AM with parent and child attending the Story Time and Pre-School Story Hour is held each Tuesday at 10:30 AM. In both sessions, children listen to stories and participate in finger plays, songs and crafts. There is no cost for this service and new families are always welcome. LIBRARY BOARD MEETING
The Pigeon District Library Board of Trustees will meet Thursday, January 27 at 4:30 PM in the library’s Community Room. The meeting is open to the public.

MICHIGAN ELECTRONIC LIBRARY (MeL)
The Michigan eLibrary (http://mel.org/) provides all Michigan residents with free access to online full-text articles, full-text books, digital images, and other valuable research information at any time via the Internet; and provides an easy-to-use interlibrary loan system to allow Michigan residents to borrow books and other library materials for free from participating Michigan libraries.
You can access the MeL databases, through our library website at http://www.pigeondistrictlibrary.com/. Click on the MeL (Michigan eLibrary) link which is located in the middle of our homepage. From the next screen click on “MeL Databases” to view the list of 50+ databases which are listed in alphabetical order.
Each week the Pigeon District Library will introduce one of the databases in the Michigan eLibrary. The database chosen for this week is “Expanded Academic ASAP.” This database is recommended for Junior and Community Colleges. “Expanded Academic ASAP” is mostly full text with magazine, newspaper and journal articles appropriate to college and university –level research.” Patrons are able to access this database from home if they have internet access and are a Michigan resident or have access to a Michigan library.

CIRCULATION
Circulation for December 2010 was 2,664 items including 1,379 Books, 12 Toys, 8 Discovery Packs, 305 DVD Rentals, 256 Video Checkouts, 101 Audio, Books on CD and Playaways, 38 Magazines, 128 Internet Users, 1 AV Equipment Rental, 5 Puzzles, 416 New Materials, and 15 NF Videos and DVDs. Inter-Loan statistics included 231 borrowed and 337 loaned to other libraries through the Valley Library Consortium. From the MelCat library system 29 items were borrowed and 27 items were loaned and on the Peabody system 3 items were loaned to other libraries. Income received included $117.15 from Copier, $166.45 from Fines, and $28.00 from Faxes. Five Story Hours were held with 29 in attendance. Fourteen registrations for the month included: Caseville 7 and Winsor 7.

JEAN M.R. SMITH COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP
The Jean M.R. Smith Foundation was established in 1996 for the primary purpose of granting college scholarships to Huron County high school seniors seeking to obtain and undergraduate degree. Scholarships may be awarded to students initially attending community colleges. Applicants must be Huron County residents. Scholarship selection criteria include character, academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, community service activities and financial need. Scholarship applications are available from your high school counselor, the Bad Axe Library, or the Pigeon District Library.
