BOOK CLUB
The book for discussion at the June meeting will be “My Name is Mary Sutter”. The next scheduled meeting is Tuesday, June 28 at 6:30 PM. If you or someone you know would like to join us for a discussion on this book, please call the library and ask for Jane Himmel.

PRE-SCHOOL STORY HOUR
There will be no story hour on Tuesday, July 5, 2011.Pre-School Story Hour is usually held each Tuesday at 10:30 AM. Children listen to stories and participate in finger plays, songs and crafts. There is no cost for this service and new families are always welcome. For more information, please call the library at 453-2341 and ask for Jane Himmel.

SATURDAY SUMMER HOURS
During June, July, and August, the library’s Saturday hours are 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM. Hours for the other days will be-Monday and Friday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Tuesday and Thursday 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM.

2011 SUMMER READING PROGRAM
“One World, Many Stories” is the theme for the 2011 Summer Reading Program at the Pigeon District Library. Registration has begun. Enjoy five weeks of summer fun by earning “dollars” for the books you read and for participating in the activities throughout the program. This program will be open to children age 5 by August 31st through grade 8, who live in the library’s service area or attend a school in the library’s service area. There will be craft activities, family programs, and Saturday movies to enjoy. Since space in limited children are asked to sign-up for the activities and family programs ahead of time.

As of June 18, 116 children have registered for the Summer Reading Program. There is still time to register! The last day for registration was Saturday, June 18th.

Upcoming events for the reading program are as follows: June 27: Craft Activity-“Boomerang” at 4:00 PM. June 30: Family Program-Italy by Jane at 5:00 PM. July 2: Free Family Movie-“Ratatouille” at 10:00 AM. July 5: Craft Activity-“It’s Me Craftstick” at 4:00 PM. July 7: Family Program-U.S.A. by Jane at 5:00 PM. July 9: Free Family Movie-“An American Tail” at 10:00 AM. Last day to hand in reading logs.
July 14: SRP PARTY-Ronald McDonald at 7:00 PM.

LEMONADE TIME AT THE LIBRARY
Cold lemonade is now available on Thursdays in the Reference Room of the library. Come and relax with a cup of lemonade while reading the newspaper or visiting with fellow readers.

MICHIGAN ELECTRONIC LIBRARY (MeL)
The Michigan eLibrary (http://mel.org) provides all Michigan residents with free access to online full-text articles, full-text books, digital images, and other valuable research information at any time via the Internet; and provides an easy-to-use interlibrary loan system to allow Michigan residents to borrow books and other library materials for free from participating Michigan libraries.

You can access the MeL databases, through our library website at www.pigeondistrictlibrary.com. Click on the Mel (Michigan eLibrary) link which is located in the right hand column of our homepage. From the next screen click on “MeL Databases” to view the list of 50+ databases which are listed in alphabetical order.

Each week the Pigeon District Library will introduce one of the databases in the Michigan eLibrary. The database chosen for this week is “LearningExpress Library.” This database is recommended for the General User. There is an interactive online learning platform of academic and licensing/certification practice tests, elementary level testing for math and reading. The database also has a section takes users from job assessment to success on the job. A tutorial course series has been designed to help all learners succeed on the tests they must pass includes immediate scoring, complete answer explanations, and an individualized analysis of practice test results. Patrons are able to access this database from home if they have internet access and are a Michigan resident or have access to a Michigan library.

QUILT SHOW
We will again be having our Annual Quilt Show during the Pigeon Farmer’s Festival. If you are interested in displaying a quilt that you or someone else has made, please call the library at 453-2341 and ask to speak to Jeanette Bach.
Quilt Show Guidelines
1. Only quilts, comforters, and wall hangings will be accepted for display purposes.
2. Pre-registration is required. Please stop in at the library and pick up a registration form and return it to the library by July 14th.
3. Quilted items which have been previously displayed at the Pigeon District Library may be displayed again after 10 years.
4. If an individual wishes to sell a quilted item, he/she must send a picture of the item along with the registration form.
5. Quilted items for sale will be identified as such and potential buyers will be directed to a bulletin board where the picture of the quilted item will be displayed along with the quilter’s contact information. No money will be collected by the Pigeon District Library staff members and volunteers.
